Biosolids Recycling
Recycling biosolids offers a safe, sustainable and environmentally sound solution to recycling organic waste materials. Also known as ‘sewage sludge', biosolids are the organic by-product of the waste water treatment process. Treated to remove pathogens, they are dewatered to either a 5% liquid form or to a solid 25% cake. Biosolids contain valuable nutrients including nitrogen, phosphorus and other soil nutrients which are proven to aid plant growth and improve soil structure. They replenish organic matter and are therefore ideal fertilisers for agricultural use.
At Oran ES, we recycle biosolids on behalf of many large water service companies such as Severn Trent Water Limited, Scottish Water and Northumbrian Water.
We also have the capability to manage the entire supply chain; from treating the biosolids to finding agricultural land, from transporting the material to fertiliser spreading. This complete service also guarantees full and auditable compliance with all environmental legislation.
In 2007, Oran ES successfully recycled nearly 1,000,000 tonnes of biosolids to agricultural land in England and Scotland, saving our clients significant sums over alternative disposal techniques such as landfill.
Land Finding
Our Farm Liason Officers (FLO) are trained under the Fertiliser Advisers Certification and Training Scheme (FACTS) to find land suitable for organic waste. Their role also ensures that landowners understand the benefits of organic waste and the rules associated with their use. Once a field and a stockpiling site have been identified, our FLOs ensure that all paperwork including risk assessments and method statements are agreed and that exemptions are made to the relevant body (either EA or SEPA).
